The 2023 American Opportunity Index looked at worker outcomes across large U.S. employers, rather than asking which company had the nicest recruiting slogan. Its leading names spanned food, distribution, banking, technology and retail. Here are the ten employers highlighted in that historical ranking, with questions a job applicant can use today.
Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola led the 2023 index. The ranking considered dimensions including hiring, pay, promotion, parity and culture. For a particular vacancy, ask what progression from that role looks like, which skills matter for the next step and how employees learn about internal opportunities.
J.M. Smucker

J.M. Smucker placed second in the historical ranking. An overall position can summarize several different measures, so it doesn't mean every category scored equally. Ask about the pay range and how reviews or promotions work for the role you're considering. A company's broad result is most useful when you can connect it to the terms of an actual offer.
W.W. Grainger

The distributor W.W. Grainger placed third. Its appearance alongside consumer brands is a reminder to look beyond the companies whose products you use daily. If the job fits your skills, investigate its training and progression options. The historical ranking identifies an employer to research; it doesn't establish that a particular team is hiring or that every position offers the same path.
PNC Financial Services

PNC was among the top ten. For a banking role, distinguish the position's responsibilities, required qualifications and working pattern from the company's overall reputation. Ask how performance is assessed and how employees move into other roles. A favorable employer-wide result can open the conversation without answering the questions about your prospective job.
ServiceNow

ServiceNow's place in the list added a technology employer to the leading group. Applicants can use that prompt to ask how technical and nontechnical career paths develop inside a business. Find out what support is available for learning, and what experience is needed for progression. An attractive industry label doesn't replace those practical details.
Meta Platforms

Meta also appeared in the 2023 top ten. That historical finding shouldn't be read as a statement about every later team, reorganization or hiring decision. Examine the current role's scope and employment terms. If a recruiter describes opportunities for advancement, ask for examples and the process employees use to pursue them.
Capital One

Capital One was another financial-services company in the leading group. For applicants, a useful comparison includes duties and the full compensation package, alongside the base salary. Ask about the role's schedule and development expectations.
Bank of America

Bank of America also made the historical list. Large employers contain many different occupations and locations. Look for information about the specific work you would do and the route into positions that interest you later. Keep the company's index placement separate from an assurance that a particular manager or office will suit your needs.
Costco Wholesale

Costco brought a retail employer into the top ten. That makes the index useful for people comparing opportunities outside office-based careers. For an available role, check the expected hours, physical requirements and advancement process. Confirm the terms that apply to you rather than assuming all positions share the same pay, benefits or scheduling arrangements.
Intuit

Intuit completed the top-ten group highlighted in the source account. As with the other employers, ask how the position connects to a longer career path. The answer should include more than a general promise of growth. Look for the responsibilities, qualifications and development opportunities attached to the actual job, and compare them with the alternatives available to you.
Use the year and method when reading a ranking

The 2023 index examined historical worker outcomes, including data from 2018–22. It wasn't a live review of every job advertisement. Read the methodology, then use the result alongside current employment information. A shortlist becomes more useful when it leads to better questions about a real role, rather than replacing your investigation with a company's place on a list.
